St Barnabas Jericho

Oxford’s Basilica

Welcome

Our mission at St Barnabas is to be place of timeless beauty, encouragement and compassion.

St Barnabas himself was the ‘Beacon of Encouragement’ and as our patron saint, he is our example to this day. St Barnabas Jericho and this website is a spacious exploration of our tradition, faith and spiritual inheritance. Wherever you are, local or global, we want to invite you to connect, explore and join the journey of faith with us.

St Barnabas Jericho (affectionately known as ‘Jericho Basilica’), will surely strike you by how vast, broad, tall and spacious the building is, with its large arches, its majestic sanctuary and altar and its striking Venetian bell tower or campanile. Basilicas are big places, with deep foundations of faith. The faith that is fostered and nurtured here is equally as vast, broad, tall and spacious. Here is a place of history, prayer, inspiration and encounter.

Welcome from the Vicar, Fr Christopher

from the poem by Sir John Betjeman, St Barnabas Oxford

How long was the peril, how breathless the day,
In topaz and beryl, the sun dies away,
His rays lying static at quarter to six
On polychromatical lacing of bricks.
Good Lord, as the angelus floats down the road
Byzantine St Barnabas, be Thine Abode.
