The statue of
Our Lady of Walsingham
Our Lady of Walsingham is a common title for an image of The Virgin Mary in England. Walsingham is a village in Norfolk, and is the site of a famous Shrine with a Holy Well. Many Churches throughout the world have statues and pictures of Our Lady of Walsingham, with Jesus seated on her lap. You can sponsor a shrine lamp which will burn beside the statue in St Barnabas. People ask Mary to pray to her Son Jesus for many reasons: to give strength and protection, to ask for help for a particular period of discernment or decision, or to remember our loved ones who have departed. The cost for a lamp here for 1 day is £5; the cost for a lamp here for 7 days is £30.
Icon of St Barnabas
St Barnabas is our patron. He is also called the ‘Son of Encouragement’ or the ‘Son of Consolation’, because he was especially known as being someone who encouraged and consoled and comforted people in the New Testament. People ask St Barnabas to pray to Jesus for comfort and encouragement, at times of loneliness, disappointment or challenge.
The cost of a lamp here for 1 day is £5; the cost for a lamp here for 7 days is £30.
In the late 4th century the Christian poet Prudentius described the experience of being in church:
Ceilings fretted with gold, gleam with brilliant light
Shed from pendulous lamps swaying on supple chains;
The flame fed by the oil languidly swims about,
Casting flickering rays through the translucent glass.
Centuries later, our churches gleam still with the light of lamps, a constant reminder that we are in the presence of God. St Barnabas lights votive lamps every day as a sign both of the constant presence of God in our world and in our lives, but also of the constant prayers of the saints to God, for us. Having a lamp dedicated for a particular intention or in memory of a special loved one who has died can be a comforting and consoling experience for everyone. St Barnabas Church offers you the chance to sponsor a lamp for a particular intention, and that intention or the person will be mentioned in prayer and on the notice board, should you wish this to be the case.
