Preparing for Emmanuel:
The great characters of Advent

Advent is rich with remarkable characters who each embody elements of expectation, hope, challenge and joy. During this season of Advent, we will use three weeks to focus on some of the figures of the Old and New Testaments who point towards the coming of the Christ in their own unique ways.

The three sessions are on Wednesdays, on Zoom. Everyone is welcome.

Wednesday 4 December 7.00pm
Isaiah – The Prophet of Hope

Isaiah’s prophecies paint a vision of peace, justice, and salvation, pointing to the coming Messiah. His words are woven into Advent liturgies, especially his images of light breaking into darkness (Isaiah 9:2) and the child who will be called “Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6).

Isaiah teaches us to hold onto hope, even in difficult times, trusting in God’s promise of redemption and transformation.

Wednesday 11 December 7.00pm
John the Baptist – The Voice in the Wilderness

Known as the “forerunner,” John the Baptist prepares the way for Jesus by calling people to repentance. His message of turning back to God echoes through Advent as a call to spiritual renewal and preparation. John’s life exemplifies humility, courage, and conviction. His call to repentance reminds us that preparing for Christ involves examining and transforming our hearts.

Wednesday 18 December 7.00pm
Joseph - the Quiet Guardian
Elizabeth - the Joyful Cousin

Joseph plays a crucial role as Mary’s husband and Jesus’ earthly father. His quiet obedience and trust in God’s plan, as shown in his response to the angel’s messages in his dream sequences reflect his deep faith.

Elizabeth waited many years for her prayers to be answered. Her story reminds us that God’s promises are fulfilled at the right time, often in unexpected ways. Elizabeth’s joyful greeting to Mary teaches us to celebrate God’s work in others’ lives without jealousy or self-pity.
